As Houston-area residents, we all want to believe our tap water is perfectly safe. After all, the City of Houston’s official water quality reports proudly state that our drinking water meets every federal and state standard. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: “legal” does not always equal “safe” — especially when it comes to arsenic.
At United Water Softeners, we’ve spent years helping families across Houston, Katy, Cypress, Richmond, Fulshear, and the surrounding areas protect their homes from hidden water contaminants. Arsenic is one of the most concerning we see. Even at the low levels found in our region’s water, the long-term health risks are real — and growing evidence shows we shouldn’t ignore them.
What Is Arsenic Doing in Houston’s Water?
Arsenic occurs naturally in Texas groundwater, particularly in the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers that supply much of the Houston area. Houston primarily uses surface water from lakes like Conroe and Houston, blended with some groundwater. That mix keeps most readings low — but zero is not guaranteed.
According to the City of Houston’s 2024 Water Quality Report, arsenic levels at the treatment plants reached a maximum of 9.9 parts per billion (ppb) — just under the EPA’s legal limit of 10 ppb. Averages typically hover between 1.5 and 2.6 ppb. In some suburban systems and private wells around Katy and Cypress, detections can be higher because of local geology.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) sets a much stricter public health goal of just 0.004 ppb for arsenic. By that standard, Houston’s water is often hundreds of times higher than what independent health experts consider ideal.
The Health Risks Are More Serious Than Most People Realize
Arsenic is a known carcinogen. Long-term exposure — even at low levels — has been linked to increased risks of skin, lung, bladder, and kidney cancers, as well as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and developmental issues in children. A 2024 Texas A&M study found that counties with drinking water arsenic between 1–5 ppb and above 5 ppb had noticeably higher kidney cancer rates compared to areas with less than 1 ppb. That’s a dose-response relationship in our own backyard.
The EPA itself admits its 10 ppb standard is a compromise between health protection and the cost of treatment. For families drinking this water every day for decades, that compromise may not be good enough.
Private wells in the Houston suburbs are an even bigger concern. Many aren’t regularly tested, and arsenic can vary widely from one street to the next.
