Why the Smith Family Chose the Sentinel Pro for Their Katy Home

The Smith family called us about scale. White crust on the fixtures, spotted glasses out of the dishwasher, soap that never quite rinsed off. That is hard water, and across Katy, Houston, Fulshear, Waller and Tomball it is the rule, not the exception.

They are now running a SENTINEL Pro Package. Here is what we installed and why.

Hard water is a Gulf Coast problem

Most of this region draws from the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers. Fulshear pulls from the Chicot. Tomball pulls from both. Groundwater moves through limestone and picks up calcium and magnesium on the way. Those two minerals are what hard water means.

Hard water costs you money in three places:

  • Appliances. Scale coats the heating element in your water heater and dishwasher. The unit works harder, runs longer and dies sooner.
  • Plumbing. Scale narrows pipe diameter over years. Pressure drops. Fixtures clog.
  • Everything you wash. Hard water fights soap. You use more detergent, more shampoo, more rinse aid, and your laundry still comes out stiff.

Nobody mails you a bill for hard water. You pay it anyway. Water heaters replaced years early, faucets pitted with scale, fixtures swapped out before their time. It adds up to $[FIGURE] for the average household. We call that the hard water tax, and you pay it every month you leave it alone.

A water softener fixes this one way: ion exchange. Resin beads trade the calcium and magnesium for sodium. Scale stops forming. That is the whole mechanism.

What the EWG found in local tap water

Hardness is a nuisance. What is dissolved alongside it is a different conversation.

The Environmental Working Group maintains a national tap water database built on utility test results reported to state regulators. Their point is simple: legal does not equal safe. Federal limits have not been updated in nearly twenty years.

For the City of Houston, EWG lists 51 contaminants detected, 14 of them above EWG health guidelines, while the utility sits in full compliance with federal standards. A few of those:

Contaminant Houston level EWG health guideline Federal legal limit
Total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) 30.4 ppb 0.15 ppb 80 ppb
Haloacetic acids (HAA5) 21.2 ppb 0.1 ppb 60 ppb
Arsenic 2.06 ppb 0.004 ppb 10 ppb
Radium (-226 and -228) 0.85 pCi/L 0.05 pCi/L 5 pCi/L
Uranium 2.19 pCi/L 0.43 pCi/L 20 pCi/L
Chromium-6 0.747 ppb 0.02 ppb none set

TTHMs and haloacetic acids are disinfection byproducts. They form when chlorine meets organic matter in the water. They are not in the source water. Treatment creates them.

The smaller systems west and north of Houston tell a different story. Katy, Fulshear, Waller and Tomball run on groundwater, and groundwater here carries radium. EWG found Texas has the most widespread radium contamination in the country, with more than 3,500 utilities serving over 22 million people reporting it. Fulshear reports combined radium at 1.63 pCi/L alongside trihalomethanes. Tomball reports combined radium too, and tested for PFAS under the EPA UCMR5 program in 2024.

Statewide, EWG counted 207 contaminants across 4,673 Texas utilities serving more than 30 million people. The ones that keep showing up above health guidelines: trihalomethanes, arsenic, radium, haloacetic acids and nitrate.

Check your own address at the EWG Tap Water Database. Then have us test what actually comes out of your tap, because the utility tests at the plant, not at your kitchen sink.

What we installed at the Smith home

The SENTINEL Pro Package handles both problems in one pass.

In the garage. Two tanks and a brine tank. The GUARDIAN softener strips the calcium and magnesium. The AQUACARB conditioner runs catalytic carbon, which reduces chlorine and the disinfection byproducts that come with it. Every drop entering the house passes through both.

Under the kitchen sink. A PUREGUARD reverse osmosis system with its own faucet and a 3.2 gallon storage tank. Reverse osmosis is the step that addresses arsenic, radium, uranium, chromium-6 and nitrate, the contaminants carbon alone will not catch. Four stages, NSF certified materials, FLOWLOK leak detection built in.

Softener for the scale. Carbon for the chemistry. RO for drinking and cooking. That is the logic of the package.

It carries a 10 year parts and labor warranty on the softener and conditioner, 5 years on the RO. Leak detection is included. So is our Freeze and Hurricane Protection Policy, which matters more in this region than most people realize until February.

The difference the Smiths noticed first

Soap lathers. Glasses come out clear. The film on the shower door stops coming back. Skin and hair stop feeling stripped. Most families report the shower within the first week.
