Chlorine taste or smell has come back
The most common symptom. Carbon media has a finite life. Once it is exhausted, chlorine and chloramine pass straight through, and you notice it first in the shower and in drinking water.
Water pressure has dropped
A media bed that has packed down or fouled with sediment restricts flow. If pressure fell off gradually over months, the filter is the usual suspect.
Sediment or discoloration at the tap
Media breaking down and passing into the plumbing, or a failed distributor tube inside the tank.
The system never backwashes
Backwashing filters clean themselves on a schedule. If the valve has failed or the timer has lost its settings, the media packs down and stops working within weeks.
Rotten egg or sulfur smell
Often hydrogen sulfide the system is no longer removing, sometimes bacteria in the tank. Either way it needs a technician, not a filter swap.
