One of our most commonly bought Sentinel ELITE Packages by United Water Softeners – ELITE CONNECT™ water softener and AQUACARB ELITE™ conditioner with PUREGUARD™ PGRO-450 reverse osmosis drinking water system.

The City of League City runs its own water system. Most of its water is treated surface water purchased from two sources: the City of Houston, which treats Trinity River water at its Southeast Water Purification Plant, and the Gulf Coast Water Authority, which treats Brazos River water. A small share comes from city wells.

League City is in the part of the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District with the tightest limits on groundwater, so surface water carries most of the load. Here is what shows up in League City water, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in League City Water

Hard water

The city's 2025 water quality report lists hardness of 124 ppm, about 7 grains per gallon. That is hard water. Calcium and magnesium leave scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, film in the shower, and stiffness in laundry, and scale is hard on water heaters, dishwashers, and tankless units. Hardness is what an ion exchange softener is built for.

Chloramine

The city disinfects with chloramine, which is chlorine combined with ammonia. Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes than chlorine, but it has its own taste and smell, and ordinary carbon filters do not remove it as well. Catalytic carbon and reverse osmosis are built for it.

Disinfection byproducts

Byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids form when disinfectant reacts with natural organic material, which river water carries more of than well water. The city reports them within federal limits. Activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis both reduce them.

Water that changes

With two river sources and city wells, the mix feeding your line can shift. When the mix changes, hardness, taste, and odor can change with it. A softener and carbon filtration keep your water consistent no matter which source is feeding your line.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
