One of our most commonly bought Sentinel ELITE Packages by United Water Softeners – ELITE CONNECT™ water softener and AQUACARB ELITE™ conditioner with PUREGUARD™ PGRO-450 reverse osmosis drinking water system.

Most Dickinson homes get water from the Dickinson Water Control and Improvement District (Dickinson WCID), formerly Galveston County WCID No. 1. The district buys all of its water as treated surface water from the Gulf Coast Water Authority's Thomas S. Mackey Water Treatment Plant, which draws from the Brazos River.

Dickinson moved off groundwater in 1983 to slow land subsidence, so the water here is river water, not well water. Here is what shows up in Dickinson water, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in Dickinson Water

Chloramine

Dickinson's water is disinfected with chloramine, which is chlorine combined with ammonia. Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes than chlorine, but it has its own taste and smell, and ordinary carbon filters do not remove it as well. Catalytic carbon and reverse osmosis are built for it.

The spring chlorine switch

Each year, typically in April, the system temporarily switches from chloramine to free chlorine to clean the lines. Many people notice a stronger chlorine taste and smell while it runs. Carbon filtration takes the edge off.

Disinfection byproducts

Byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids form when disinfectant reacts with natural organic material, which river water carries more of than well water. Public systems must keep them within federal limits. Activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis both reduce them.

Hard water

Calcium and magnesium leave scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, film in the shower, and buildup in water heaters and tankless units. River water hardness can change with the seasons and river conditions, so a test at your sink shows where your water is today.

Lead

The district reports no lead service lines in its system. Older homes can still have lead solder or fixtures inside the house, and reverse osmosis reduces lead at the kitchen tap.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
