One of our most commonly bought Sentinel ELITE Packages by United Water Softeners – ELITE CONNECT™ water softener and AQUACARB ELITE™ conditioner with PUREGUARD™ PGRO-450 reverse osmosis drinking water system.

The City of Willis supplies its residents with groundwater from five city wells in the Jasper aquifer, disinfected with chlorine. Outside city limits, homes around Willis and the east side of Lake Conroe are on private wells or on small systems run by utility districts and water companies.

That makes Willis-area water more varied than most. Here is what shows up, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in Willis-Area Water

Natural fluoride

Fluoride occurs naturally in Willis well water. The city's 2025 report lists 1.44 ppm, below the federal limit of 4 ppm and about twice the 0.7 ppm level the U.S. Public Health Service recommends for community water. Reverse osmosis reduces fluoride at the kitchen tap.

Arsenic

Arsenic occurs naturally in the aquifers under this part of Texas. A 2023 sample from the city system measured 4.4 parts per billion, below the federal limit of 10. The EPA's health goal is zero. The treatment that addresses arsenic is reverse osmosis or ion exchange. A carbon filter does not remove it.

Hard water

Hardness varies a lot around Willis. State test results for the City of Willis average about 107 ppm, roughly 6 grains per gallon. Some nearby systems around Lake Conroe test under 20 ppm, and others test above 300 ppm. A test at your sink tells you whether a softener makes sense for your home.

Chlorine

Chlorine is what makes city water safe to deliver, but many people notice the taste and smell. Activated carbon filtration removes it, and reverse osmosis covers your drinking water.

Private wells

If your home is on a private well, no utility tests your water for you. Well water around Lake Conroe can carry iron, manganese, sulfur odor, and hardness, and it can change over time. Our well water filtration systems are built for this, and a water test is the place to start.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
