One of our most commonly bought Sentinel ELITE Packages by United Water Softeners – ELITE CONNECT™ water softener and AQUACARB ELITE™ conditioner with PUREGUARD™ PGRO-450 reverse osmosis drinking water system.

Inside city limits, Humble homes get water from the City of Humble. The city's 2024 water quality report describes a blend of about 70 percent groundwater from five city wells in the Gulf Coast Aquifer and 30 percent treated surface water purchased from the City of Houston.

Outside the city, Humble-area neighborhoods such as Atascocita, Eagle Springs, and Fall Creek are served by municipal utility districts (MUDs), each with its own mix of wells and surface water. Here is what shows up in the Humble area, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in Humble-Area Water

Hard water

One of the most common complaints we hear in Humble. Calcium and magnesium leave scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, film in the shower, and stiffness in laundry. Scale is also hard on your water heater, dishwasher, and tankless units. Hardness can differ from one district to the next, and it is what an ion exchange softener is built for.

Chloramine and disinfection byproducts

The City of Humble disinfects with chloramine, which is chlorine combined with ammonia. Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes than chlorine, but it has its own taste and smell, and ordinary carbon filters do not remove it as well. Catalytic carbon and reverse osmosis are built for it. The city reports disinfection byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids well below federal limits, and carbon filtration and reverse osmosis reduce them further.

Arsenic

Arsenic occurs naturally in the aquifers under this part of Texas. The city's report lists arsenic at 6.2 parts per billion in 2023 sampling, below the federal limit of 10. The EPA's health goal for arsenic is zero. The treatment that addresses arsenic is reverse osmosis or ion exchange. A carbon filter does not remove it.

Herbicides in surface water

Surface water can carry traces of herbicides from upstream land. The city's report lists atrazine below the federal limit. Activated carbon and reverse osmosis both reduce it.

Iron, manganese, and other minerals

These come from natural mineral deposits in area groundwater. They cause rust staining, discoloration, and metallic taste. Ion exchange, iron filtration, and reverse osmosis address most of them.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
