One of our most commonly bought Sentinel ELITE Packages by United Water Softeners – ELITE CONNECT™ water softener and AQUACARB ELITE™ conditioner with PUREGUARD™ PGRO-450 reverse osmosis drinking water system.

Most homes in The Woodlands get water from Woodlands Water, which runs the water systems for the community's municipal utility districts (MUDs). Woodlands Water buys its water from the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA). The SJRA treats surface water from Lake Conroe and blends it with groundwater from deep wells in the Evangeline and Jasper aquifers.

The lake water share of that blend has grown over the past decade, from about a third to about half or more. Here is what shows up in The Woodlands, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in The Woodlands Water

Hard water

Woodlands Water reports average hardness of about 52 ppm (roughly 3 grains per gallon), ranging from about 29 to 68 ppm. That is softer than much of the Houston area, but it still leaves spots on glassware and slowly builds scale in water heaters and tankless units, and it shifts as the blend changes. A test at your sink tells you whether a softener makes sense for your home.

Chlorine and disinfection byproducts

Woodlands Water disinfects with chlorine, which is what makes water safe to deliver through miles of pipe. The trade-off is chlorine taste and smell, plus byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids that form when chlorine reacts with natural organic material, which lake water carries more of than well water. Activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis both reduce these.

Water that changes

Lake water and well water are different, and the share of each in the blend has changed over time. Lake water can also pick up seasonal taste and odor. When the mix changes, hardness, taste, and odor can change with it. A softener and carbon filtration keep your water consistent no matter which source is feeding your line.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
