Hockley sits along US 290 between Cypress and Waller, where new MUD neighborhoods sit next to acreage on private wells. Nearly all of it is groundwater, and it is served by more than a dozen small utilities.

That means there is no single answer to what is in Hockley water. Here is what shows up in this area, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in Hockley-Area Water

Hard water

The most common complaint we hear in Hockley. Calcium and magnesium leave scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, film in the shower, and stiffness in laundry. Scale is also hard on your water heater, dishwasher, and tankless units. Hardness is what an ion exchange softener is built for.

Iron, manganese, and other minerals

These come from natural mineral deposits in area groundwater. They cause rust staining, discoloration, and metallic taste. Ion exchange, iron filtration, and reverse osmosis address most of them.

Arsenic

Arsenic occurs naturally in the aquifers under this part of Texas and shows up in some groundwater systems around Hockley. Levels vary between utilities, and public systems are required to stay within federal limits. The treatment that addresses arsenic is reverse osmosis or ion exchange. A carbon filter does not remove it.

Radium and uranium

Both are naturally occurring radiological elements found in Texas groundwater, and both appear in some systems across the region. Reverse osmosis and ion exchange are the effective treatments.

Chlorine, chloramine, and disinfection byproducts

Every public system disinfects, and it has to. That is what makes water safe to deliver. The trade-off is chlorine or chloramine taste and smell, plus byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids that form when disinfectant reacts with organic material. Activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis both reduce these.

If you are on a private well

Many homes around Hockley are on private wells rather than a public system. Well water is a different picture. No utility is testing it for you, and iron, sulfur odor, sediment, and bacteria are all possible. If you are on a well, testing is not optional. Call us and we will tell you what your water needs.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
