One of our most commonly bought Sentinel ELITE Packages by United Water Softeners – ELITE CONNECT™ water softener and AQUACARB ELITE™ conditioner with PUREGUARD™ PGRO-450 reverse osmosis drinking water system.

Spring is unincorporated, so there is no city water department. Most homes get water from one of dozens of municipal utility districts (MUDs), and many of those districts belong to the North Harris County Regional Water Authority. The authority buys treated surface water from the City of Houston, drawn from Lake Houston, and delivers it to member districts, which blend it with water from their own wells.

Harris-Galveston Subsidence District rules call for the area to keep moving from groundwater to surface water to limit land subsidence, so the blend in many Spring neighborhoods has been changing for years. That is why two subdivisions a mile apart can have noticeably different water. Here is what shows up in the Spring area, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in Spring-Area Water

Hard water

One of the most common complaints we hear in Spring. Calcium and magnesium leave scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, film in the shower, and stiffness in laundry. Scale is also hard on your water heater, dishwasher, and tankless units. Hardness can differ from one district to the next, and it is what an ion exchange softener is built for.

Chloramine and disinfection byproducts

When your district is receiving surface water from the authority, it is typically disinfected with chloramine, which is chlorine combined with ammonia. Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes than chlorine, but it has its own taste and smell, and ordinary carbon filters do not remove it as well. Catalytic carbon and reverse osmosis are built for it. Disinfection also creates byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, which form when disinfectant reacts with natural organic material. Activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis both reduce them.

Water that changes

Districts switch between well water, surface water, and blends of the two. Since 2021, Lake Houston has also received Trinity River water through the Luce Bayou project. When the mix changes, hardness, taste, and odor can change with it. A softener and carbon filtration keep your water consistent no matter which source is feeding your line.

Iron, manganese, and other minerals

These come from natural mineral deposits in area groundwater. They cause rust staining, discoloration, and metallic taste. Ion exchange, iron filtration, and reverse osmosis address most of them.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
