One of our most commonly bought Sentinel ELITE Packages by United Water Softeners – ELITE CONNECT™ water softener and AQUACARB ELITE™ conditioner with PUREGUARD™ PGRO-450 reverse osmosis drinking water system.

Kingwood has been part of the City of Houston since 1996, but its water does not come from the same place as most of Houston. The City of Houston's Kingwood water system runs on groundwater: 16 wells drawing from the Evangeline and Chicot aquifers, more than 750 feet deep.

Because the source is well water, the Kingwood system is disinfected with chlorine rather than the chloramine used in much of Houston's surface water system. Here is what shows up in Kingwood water, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in Kingwood Water

Hard water

The Kingwood system's 2025 water quality report lists hardness of 124 ppm, about 7 grains per gallon. That is hard water. Calcium and magnesium leave scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, film in the shower, and stiffness in laundry, and scale is hard on water heaters, dishwashers, and tankless units. Hardness is what an ion exchange softener is built for.

Chlorine

Chlorine is what makes water safe to deliver, but it brings a taste and smell many people notice. The Kingwood report lists disinfection byproducts well below federal limits. Activated carbon filtration removes chlorine taste and odor, and reverse osmosis covers your drinking water.

Natural radium

Deep aquifers carry trace amounts of natural radioactivity. The Kingwood report lists combined radium at 1.26 pCi/L, below the federal limit of 5. The EPA's health goal is zero. Both an ion exchange softener and reverse osmosis reduce radium.

Iron, manganese, and other minerals

These come from natural mineral deposits in area groundwater. They cause rust staining, discoloration, and metallic taste. Ion exchange, iron filtration, and reverse osmosis address most of them.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
