One of our most commonly bought Sentinel ELITE Packages by United Water Softeners – ELITE CONNECT™ water softener and AQUACARB ELITE™ conditioner with PUREGUARD™ PGRO-450 reverse osmosis drinking water system.

Missouri City water comes from the city and from a long list of municipal utility districts (MUDs), so older neighborhoods like Quail Valley and newer communities like Sienna can be on different systems.

The city's Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant, opened in 2012 and expanded in 2020, treats Brazos River water purchased from the Gulf Coast Water Authority. That surface water is blended with groundwater from wells in the Evangeline aquifer, and some districts still rely on groundwater alone. Here is what shows up in Missouri City water, and what treatment does about each one.

What Shows Up in Missouri City Water

Hard water

One of the most common complaints we hear in Missouri City. Calcium and magnesium leave scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, film in the shower, and stiffness in laundry. Scale is also hard on your water heater, dishwasher, and tankless units. Hardness can differ from one district to the next, and it is what an ion exchange softener is built for.

Chlorine, chloramine, and disinfection byproducts

Systems using surface water, including the city's south service area, disinfect with chloramine, which is chlorine combined with ammonia. Groundwater-only districts may use chlorine instead. Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes than chlorine, but it has its own taste and smell, and ordinary carbon filters do not remove it as well. Catalytic carbon and reverse osmosis are built for it. Disinfection also creates byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, which form when disinfectant reacts with natural organic material. Activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis both reduce them.

Water that changes

Some homes get river water, some get well water, and many get a blend. When the mix changes, hardness, taste, and odor can change with it. A softener and carbon filtration keep your water consistent no matter which source is feeding your line.

Iron, manganese, and other minerals

These come from natural mineral deposits in area groundwater. They cause rust staining, discoloration, and metallic taste. Ion exchange, iron filtration, and reverse osmosis address most of them.

Which Treatment Handles What

  • Ion exchange softener — hardness, plus some minerals and radiological elements
  • Activated carbon filtration — chlorine, taste and odor, and disinfection byproducts
  • Reverse osmosis — the broadest reduction, including arsenic, chromium-6, radium, uranium, and nitrate
  • Sediment filtration — particulate and turbidity

This is why our packages pair a whole-home system with a drinking water system. A softener handles the water that goes on you. Reverse osmosis handles the water that goes in you. Neither one does the other job.
